Short answer: agency coverage usually ends when an assignment does, and a marketplace plan from your home state is built around that state, so on assignment it covers emergencies and little else. A private plan on the UnitedHealthcare or PHCS PPO network stays the same from contract to contract, in any state, and the main one has no deductible.
Often the simplest while it lasts. Check when it starts and ends, and what happens in the weeks between.
Losing agency coverage opens a 60-day window. A tax credit can help if your yearly income is under the line ($63,840 for one person for 2027 coverage). Out of state, check the network type first.
Yours, not the agency’s, so it carries on between and during contracts. It asks health questions and pays set amounts rather than the whole bill.
Age 30 in Texas, before health questions. The private plan covers less than an ACA plan and asks about your health; the marketplace price is before any tax credit.
More: travel nurse health insurance between assignments.

The insurance company pays the agent, never you, and the premium is the same either way.

Most use the agency’s plan while on contract. Between contracts the options are COBRA, a marketplace plan from the home state (losing agency coverage opens a 60-day window), or a private plan on a national PPO network that stays the same from contract to contract.
If it is an HMO or EPO, only for emergencies. A PPO pays part of out-of-network care. Texas, where many travel nurses keep a home base, had no marketplace PPO in 2026.
For a healthy nurse whose income is over the tax-credit line, a private plan is usually cheaper than a full-price marketplace plan. Under the line, a home-state marketplace plan with the credit can cost less.
General information, not a quote or an offer of coverage. Private plans are medically underwritten: they ask health questions, can decline or exclude a condition, are not ACA coverage and get no tax credit. “I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything — compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”
