Short answer: your marketplace plan comes from your home state, and if it is an HMO or EPO, the doctor near your winter home is covered only in an emergency. Ohio’s marketplace was all HMOs in 2026. A private plan on the UnitedHealthcare or PHCS PPO network has providers in both places, and the main one has no deductible.

What a winter away really costs

Four or five months in Florida or Arizona means routine visits, prescriptions and the odd urgent problem there. On an HMO or EPO from home, only true emergencies are covered; the rest is full price, and follow-up care after an emergency usually means going home for it.

Age 60 in Ohio, before health questions. The private plan covers less than an ACA plan and asks about your health; the marketplace price is before any tax credit.

“I don’t know why I was paying so much for my BCBS plan. I wasn’t even using it, maybe because the brand has such a big network, but now I pay half as much and I don’t have a deductible.”

Common questions

What health insurance is best for snowbirds under 65?

One with a national network: a home-state PPO where one is sold, or a private plan on the UnitedHealthcare or PHCS PPO network. A home-state HMO or EPO covers the winter state only in emergencies.

Can I buy a marketplace plan in my winter state?

Only if it is your primary place of living. A state you visit for part of the year does not count.

Is emergency care covered in my winter state?

Yes. Every ACA plan must cover emergency care anywhere at in-network cost-sharing. Routine and follow-up care is the gap.

“I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything — compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”
