Health Insurance When You Move to Another State

Your marketplace plan does not move with you. The 60-day window, what to do first, and how to compare the plans and prices in the new state before you go.

Short answer: your marketplace plan does not move with you. A move to a new state opens a Special Enrollment Period, and in most cases you have 60 days from the move to choose a plan there. A private plan has no window: it can start any month, and the main one has no deductible.

What to do, in order

  1. Before the movePrice the new state

Prices and insurers change at the state line; use the state comparison or the cost-by-state tool.

  2. Within 60 daysApply in the new state

A new application: a state-run marketplace or HealthCare.gov, depending on the state. Moving only for medical treatment or a vacation does not qualify.

  3. After you enrollEnd the old plan

HealthCare.gov’s order: enroll in the new plan first, then end the old one, so there is no gap.

Moving over the tax-credit line

If your household income is over the line ($63,840 for one person, $132,000 for a family of four for 2027 coverage), the new state’s marketplace is full price. That is the moment to price a private plan as well; it can start the first of any month, so there is no window to miss.

Age 40 in North Carolina, before health questions. The private plan covers less than an ACA plan and asks about your health; the marketplace price is before any tax credit.

“I don’t know why I was paying so much for my BCBS plan. I wasn’t even using it, maybe because the brand has such a big network, but now I pay half as much and I don’t have a deductible.”

Common questions

Does my health insurance transfer when I move to another state?

A marketplace plan does not: you apply again in the new state. The move opens a Special Enrollment Period, and in most cases you have 60 days from the move.

What counts as a qualifying move?

A move to a new ZIP code or county. Moving only for medical treatment or staying somewhere on vacation does not qualify.

Should I cancel my old plan first?

No. HealthCare.gov says to enroll in the new plan first and then end the old one, so there is no gap.

“I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything — compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”
