A marketplace plan’s price can depend on only four things about you: your age, tobacco use, how many people are covered, and where you live. “Where you live” means your rating area, a group of counties or a metro area that the state draws and CMS approves. An insurer charges the same price for the same plan, at the same age, everywhere in a rating area, and can charge a different price in the next one.
The 23 states covered here have from 4 rating areas (Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada and South Dakota) to 67 (Florida, one per county). Where you live inside a state can matter as much as which state: in Michigan the benchmark Silver plan for a 40-year-old costs $388 a month in area 5 (Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee counties) and $910 in area 16 (13 counties including Alger and Baraga); in Florida, $572 in area 5 (Brevard County) and $1,278 in area 44 (Monroe County). Arkansas is the exception: every 2026 marketplace plan there costs the same in all seven of its areas.
