Marketplace prices are set by age. The same plan costs a 64-year-old three times what it costs a 21-year-old, which is the most federal law allows. This table shows the benchmark Silver plan, the one the premium tax credit is measured against, at seven ages in each of the 23 states covered here.

At 64 the full monthly price runs from $972 in Maryland to $1,817 in Arkansas. For a 21-year-old it is $324 to $606. Two things break the usual pattern. Utah uses its own age curve: prices climb faster through the 20s and 30s and reach the top rate at 59, so a 60-year-old and a 64-year-old pay the same. Alabama and Mississippi charge children one flat, lower rate through age 20.

Age 40 = KFF’s 2026 average benchmark premium for each state (the second-lowest-cost Silver plan for a 40-year-old, weighted by plan selections). Other ages use the federal default age curve published by CMS, which every state here follows except Utah (its own CMS-approved curve) and, for children, Alabama and Mississippi (a flat 0.635 factor under 21); all three checked against the CMS Plan Year 2026 plan records. Full price per person per month, non-smoker, before any tax credit. Your county and plan will differ. Not a quote or an offer of coverage. Checked October 3, 2026.

How the age curve works

What you actually pay

Below 400% of the poverty line ($63,840 for one person for 2027 coverage), the tax credit caps the benchmark plan at a share of your income, at most 10.22%, whatever your age. A 64-year-old earning $60,000 pays no more than $511 a month for the benchmark in any of these states, even where its full price is over $1,500. That is why the age curve hits hardest just above the line, where there is no credit at all: what the full price takes out of your income, state by state.

Over the line and healthy? At full price the marketplace is not the only option worth pricing. A privately underwritten plan can cost less than the full-price benchmark; it covers less, and its price depends on your health answers. A licensed agent will show you both side by side and say which one fits your position.

2027 prices are going up in every state, by an average of 6.0% in Arkansas to 21.6% in Oklahoma (by state). This page switches to 2027 benchmarks when KFF publishes them in late October.

What does 2027 do to your premium?

A state average can’t tell you that. Enter your ZIP and a licensed agent will send you the real 2027 prices for your county as soon as they’re posted, and what you’d pay after any credit you qualify for. It costs nothing, and you deal with a licensed agent, not a call center.

“I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything — compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”
