Above 400% of the poverty line, you pay the whole increase.
The enhanced credits that removed that limit expired at the end of 2025, so there is no credit to soften a rate rise in 2027. If you run your own business, the line is often something you can move, and what crossing it actually costs runs from $3,053 a year in Arkansas down to nothing at all in five states. The state-by-state figures are here.
Above the line, the unsubsidized marketplace price is not your only option. Some other kinds of individual coverage are medically underwritten, which means your health history decides whether you qualify and what you pay. The trade-offs are real: underwritten plans are not required to cover the same essential health benefits, can exclude conditions you already have, and may not renew the same way. Whether one is a better deal depends on your health, your income and what you need covered, which is why it is worth having both sides walked through.

A plan costs the same through an agent as it does on healthcare.gov. The carrier pays the commission out of that premium, so help is free to you.

The numbers behind this site: the CMS Plan Year 2026 filings, plus state rate approvals for the six states that run their own marketplaces. A 40-year-old pays $558 a month in Indiana and $875 in Nebraska for the same Silver plan, before any help. Premiums are full-price filed rates before premium tax credits and are not a quote.
Live in more than one state?
Marketplace plans are sold one state at a time, and most cover another state only in an emergency. In 7 of the 17 HealthCare.gov states covered here, no marketplace plan was a PPO in 2026.
“I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything, compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”
