Short answer: the move to a new state opens a 60-day window to pick a plan there, counted from the move date (state-run marketplaces may open it up to 60 days early). A plan picked by the last day of a month starts on the 1st of the next. Enter the move below for your own dates and both states’ 2027 prices.

Example: California to Texas, moving December 12, 2026

  1. December 12, 2026The window opens

The new Texas address is the qualifying event; apply on HealthCare.gov.

  2. December 31, 2026Pick a plan by this date

It starts January 1, 2027. Keep the California plan until then, then end it.

  3. February 10, 2027Last day to pick

Day 60 after the move. A plan picked then starts March 1, 2027.

Common questions

When does health insurance start after moving to another state?

The first of the month after you pick a plan. Pick by the last day of the move month and it starts on the 1st of the next.

What if I had no health insurance before the move?

Then the move alone does not open a window: it needs coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before, unless you are moving from another country or a U.S. territory. The next chance is Open Enrollment or another qualifying event; a private plan can start any month but asks health questions.

Do I have to cancel my old plan?

Yes, once the new plan starts. Enroll in the new state first, then end the old plan, so there is no gap.

“I run my own business and my time is valuable. Daniel handled everything — compared the private options, explained what I was actually getting, and had me covered fast. Way better experience than trying to navigate it myself.”
