How do nurse anesthetists get health insurance?

Nurse Anesthetists without a plan through an employer or agency have four routes:

For nurse anesthetists, the job itself is part of the decision: long cases on your feet and anesthetic-gas exposure. That makes the out-of-pocket maximum — up to $10,600 for one person in 2026 ($12,000 in 2027) — a bigger number to compare than the premium.

If you work for yourself, business costs such as malpractice insurance, licensing, certification and travel for contract work come off before the credit is worked out: it is based on net self-employment income, not what clients pay you.

How much does a nurse anesthetist make?

BLS puts the median wage for Nurse Anesthetists (SOC 29-1151) at $122,040 in Utah up to $234,520 in Michigan, across the 20 states where BLS prints a median (May 2024). In Illinois and Wisconsin BLS does not print the median because it is $239,200 or more. Starting pay — the 10th percentile — runs from $52,940 (Maryland) to $209,550 (Wisconsin). The top 10% earn more than $237,250 in Maryland. These figures count employees; the self-employed are not in the BLS survey, so treat them as the going rate for the work, not your own number. Each state’s pay is in the table above.

What does health insurance cost a nurse anesthetist?

Insurers cannot charge more for your occupation: marketplace prices depend on age, ZIP code, tobacco use and household size. For a single 40-year-old the benchmark Silver plan’s full price for 2026 runs from $414 a month in Maryland to $774 in Arkansas. The median for this work is over the 400% line in every state published here, so at that income there is no tax credit and the full price applies. Your own household income and size decide the real number; the table above shows the benchmark in each state.

Which hospitals will your plan actually cover?

The middle of the state medians for nurse anesthetists is $207,120, and the median clears the 400% subsidy cliff in 22 of the 22 states measured. Above that line no premium tax credit arrives, so you pay the whole cost of whatever you choose — and what you are really buying at that point is the network. A cheaper plan is nearly always cheaper because it covers fewer places.

That median counts employees, not the self-employed. If you are 1099 it describes people doing your job on someone else’s payroll — useful as a reference point, not as your number.

Network participation is decided per plan, not per carrier. One insurer sells a broad-network plan and a narrow one side by side in the same county, and a hospital can be contracted with the first and not the second. That makes “does this carrier cover my hospital” unanswerable. The version with an answer is whether this specific plan, in your county, this plan year includes the facilities and doctors you use. With no credit softening the decision, picking the wrong network is not a rounding error — it is the year.

It takes about ten minutes to settle. Search the plan’s own provider directory for your named physicians rather than the hospital system; check the specific campus, because a system can include one site and exclude another; then call the billing office and read them the exact plan name, since that is how the contract is written. Re-check every plan year — these are renegotiated annually.
