What actually matters for a plumber

Injury exposure means the number that matters is the out-of-pocket maximum, not the premium. A single ER visit and follow-up can hit that ceiling in one month, so these pages rank states by worst-case annual exposure rather than by monthly cost.

Occupational context: Confined-space entry; sewage and biohazard exposure; back strain.

Worth being clear about what this does and does not affect: a carrier in Florida cannot ask what you do for a living, cannot charge a plumber more than a librarian of the same age in the same ZIP, and cannot exclude anything you were already treated for. Occupation only tells you which plan structure to shop for.

What it costs county by county in Florida

Premium is set by rating area, so a plumber in one Florida county can pay materially more than one an hour away. Six counties from across the state, cheapest Silver plan for a 40-year-old:

Taylor$820Florida Blue HMO (a BlueCross BlueShield FL company)$9,5004
Indian River$554Ambetter Health$8,0007
Madison$612Ambetter Health$8,0005

The spread across just these six is $266/month — $3,188 a year for the same metal tier. Statewide the range runs $554 to $2,203. Coverage by County publishes all 67 Florida counties individually.

For a plumber, the gap between $2,250 and $10,600 in annual out-of-pocket maximum is worth more than any premium difference on this page. One serious injury reaches that ceiling regardless of which plan you picked.

How Florida compares for Plumbers

Cheaper for the same coverage: South Dakota ($725), Oklahoma ($731), Kansas ($765). More expensive: Utah ($805), Texas ($807), North Carolina ($828).

A caveat on the table above: rating is by residence, not by job site. A plumber living in Florida and working across a state line still buys Florida plans. A genuine permanent move does trigger a special enrollment period, but the plan year restarts with a fresh deductible.

Self-employed Plumbers in Florida

If you file a Schedule C as a plumber, the categories that usually show up are: Tools, van, licensing, materials, liability insurance. The health premium itself is normally an above-the-line deduction under IRC §162(l), which reduces AGI rather than requiring you to itemize. Your CPA should confirm it against your actual situation.

If your household income is above the subsidy range, ACA is not automatically the answer. There are other categories of coverage that may fit, and they work very differently. That is a conversation, not a web page.

Common questions

How much is health insurance for a plumber in Florida?

Wage benchmark and the 2026 subsidy cliff

Below the cliff. At this income a single-person household remains eligible for a premium tax credit in 2026.

This occupation sits above the cliff in 8 of the 21 states reported and below it in the other 13, so the answer changes with the state.

What this figure is. It is the median annual wage BLS reports for Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters (SOC 47-2152) in Florida. BLS surveys wage and salary workers and excludes the self-employed, so it is a benchmark for the occupation in this state — not the income of a self-employed plumber. Premium tax credit eligibility is set by household modified adjusted gross income and household size, not by occupation, so treat this as a reference point rather than a determination of what you qualify for.

Why the cliff is back. The enhanced premium tax credits expired on 31 December 2025. For plan year 2026 the 400% FPL limit applies again, so household income above $62,600 ends premium tax credit eligibility outright.

What Plumbers in Florida should expect in 2027

Florida loses a carrier this cycle: Cigna is out of the ACA individual market from January 1, 2027, leaving 14 filing here. For Plumbers that is a forced decision, and a better one made in November than in January.

On price the only honest number today is national: the Peterson-KFF read of 2027 filings puts the median proposed rise near 15%, spanning −1% to 54%. Final Florida rates are not approved, so any precise 2027 figure quoted for this state is guesswork.

Mark November 1, 2026 to open and December 15 to act. That second date guarantees cover from January 1 in Florida regardless of how the current litigation over the enrollment window resolves.

All 67 counties in Florida sell a PPO, which is unusual and useful. For a plumber covering ground, it is the plan type that travels best.

Get ahead of the November rush

You already know you are changing plans — Cigna is leaving. The only real question is whether you pick the replacement or the marketplace picks it for you, and that is a much easier decision made in August than in the second week of December.
