What actually matters for a hvac contractor

Injury exposure means the number that matters is the out-of-pocket maximum, not the premium. A single ER visit and follow-up can hit that ceiling in one month, so these pages rank states by worst-case annual exposure rather than by monthly cost.

Occupational context: Refrigerant exposure; heat stress; attic and roof falls.

This is background for choosing a plan, not for pricing one. Since 2014 every Florida exchange plan has been guaranteed issue and community rated: same age, same ZIP, same tobacco status means the same filed premium whether you are a hvac contractor or an accountant. Occupation changes the shopping criteria, nothing else.

What it costs county by county in Florida

Premium is set by rating area, so a hvac contractor in one Florida county can pay materially more than one an hour away. Six counties from across the state, cheapest Silver plan for a 40-year-old:

CountyCheapest Silver @40IssuerDeductibleCarriers
Hillsborough$645Florida Blue HMO (a BlueCross BlueShield FL company)$9,5008
Citrus$658Ambetter Health$8,0004
Okaloosa$669Ambetter Health$8,0004
Seminole$693Oscar Health Maintenance Organization of Florida$5,00011
Jackson$724Ambetter Health$8,0003
Columbia$747Ambetter Health$8,0004

The spread across just these six is $102/month — $1,221 a year for the same metal tier. Statewide the range runs $554 to $2,203. Coverage by County publishes all 67 Florida counties individually.

For a hvac contractor, the gap between $2,250 and $10,600 in annual out-of-pocket maximum is worth more than any premium difference on this page. One serious injury reaches that ceiling regardless of which plan you picked.

How Florida compares for HVAC Contractors

Cheaper for the same coverage: South Dakota ($725), Oklahoma ($731), Kansas ($765). More expensive: Utah ($805), Texas ($807), North Carolina ($828).

Side-by-side: Florida vs Oklahoma · Florida vs Kansas · Florida vs Utah · Florida vs Texas

This only matters if you can actually choose — you buy in the state where you live, not where you work. If you are a hvac contractor who moved this year, that move is a qualifying life event and opens a special enrollment period.

Self-employed HVAC Contractors in Florida

Expense categories that typically apply to this trade: Tools, van, EPA certification, liability insurance. Premiums are generally deductible above the line under IRC §162(l) when no employer plan is available to you or your spouse — a question for your CPA, not your agent.

If your household income is above the subsidy range, ACA is not automatically the answer. There are other categories of coverage that may fit, and they work very differently. That is a conversation, not a web page.

Wage benchmark and the 2026 subsidy cliff

Below the cliff. At this income a single-person household remains eligible for a premium tax credit in 2026.

This occupation sits above the cliff in 3 of the 21 states reported and below it in the other 18, so the answer changes with the state.

What this figure is. It is the median annual wage BLS reports for Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers (SOC 49-9021) in Florida. BLS surveys wage and salary workers and excludes the self-employed, so it is a benchmark for the occupation in this state — not the income of a self-employed hvac contractor. Premium tax credit eligibility is set by household modified adjusted gross income and household size, not by occupation, so treat this as a reference point rather than a determination of what you qualify for.

Why the cliff is back. The enhanced premium tax credits expired on 31 December 2025. For plan year 2026 the 400% FPL limit applies again, so household income above $62,600 ends premium tax credit eligibility outright.

Looking ahead to 2027 as a hvac contractor in Florida

Florida loses a carrier this cycle: Cigna is out of the ACA individual market from January 1, 2027, leaving 14 filing here. For HVAC Contractors that is a forced decision, and a better one made in November than in January.

On price the only honest number today is national: the Peterson-KFF read of 2027 filings puts the median proposed rise near 15%, spanning −1% to 54%. Final Florida rates are not approved, so any precise 2027 figure quoted for this state is guesswork.

Enrollment opens November 1, 2026. Treat December 15 as the deadline: it guarantees January 1 cover on every marketplace, Florida included. Conflicting end dates get quoted because a 2025 rule shortened the window and a court vacated it in June 2026, appeal pending — enrol by the 15th and the argument is irrelevant to you.

All 67 counties in Florida sell a PPO, which is unusual and useful. For a hvac contractor covering ground, it is the plan type that travels best.

Get a head start on 2027

You already know you are changing plans — Cigna is leaving. The only real question is whether you pick the replacement or the marketplace picks it for you, and that is a much easier decision made in August than in the second week of December.
