What actually matters for a carpenter

Injury exposure means the number that matters is the out-of-pocket maximum, not the premium. A single ER visit and follow-up can hit that ceiling in one month, so these pages rank states by worst-case annual exposure rather than by monthly cost.

Occupational context: Saw and nail-gun injuries; hearing loss; back strain from lifting.

Two things get confused here constantly. Risk exposure decides what coverage you should buy. It does not decide what you are charged — Florida carriers rate on age, ZIP, tobacco and family size, full stop. A carpenter with a bad back and a healthy 40-year-old office worker in the same county see the same number.

What it costs county by county in Florida

Premium is set by rating area, so a carpenter in one Florida county can pay materially more than one an hour away. Six counties from across the state, cheapest Silver plan for a 40-year-old:

CountyCheapest Silver @40IssuerDeductibleCarriers
Hardee$831Ambetter Health$8,0006
Brevard$560Ambetter Health$8,0008
Franklin$613Ambetter Health$8,0004
Bay$640Ambetter Health$8,0004
Bradford$654Ambetter Health$8,0005
Baker$660Ambetter Health$8,0005

The spread across just these six is $271/month — $3,248 a year for the same metal tier. Statewide the range runs $554 to $2,203. Coverage by County publishes all 67 Florida counties individually.

For a carpenter, the gap between $2,250 and $10,600 in annual out-of-pocket maximum is worth more than any premium difference on this page. One serious injury reaches that ceiling regardless of which plan you picked.

How Florida compares for Carpenters

Cheaper for the same coverage: South Dakota ($725), Oklahoma ($731), Kansas ($765). More expensive: Utah ($805), Texas ($807), North Carolina ($828).

Side-by-side: Florida vs Oklahoma · Florida vs Kansas · Florida vs Utah · Florida vs Texas

Read the comparison as context, not as a shopping list. Your county of residence determines what you can buy, and for a carpenter that is fixed unless you relocate. Where it is actionable is a move already in progress — that is a qualifying life event, and you have 60 days on either side of it.

Self-employed Carpenters in Florida

Deduction categories that generally fit this trade: Tools, truck, lumber, jobsite travel, liability insurance. Note the ordering problem with health premiums: the §162(l) deduction lowers your AGI, and your AGI is what sets your premium tax credit, so the two calculate against each other. That is a CPA conversation and worth having before you enroll, not after.

If your household income is above the subsidy range, ACA is not automatically the answer. There are other categories of coverage that may fit, and they work very differently. That is a conversation, not a web page.

Common questions

How much is health insurance for a carpenter in Florida?

Wage benchmark and the 2026 subsidy cliff

$48,080median annual wage, Carpenters in Florida

$62,6002026 subsidy cliff, single-person household

Below the cliff. At this income a single-person household remains eligible for a premium tax credit in 2026.

This occupation sits above the cliff in 1 of the 21 states reported and below it in the other 20, so the answer changes with the state.

What this figure is. It is the median annual wage BLS reports for Carpenters (SOC 47-2031) in Florida. BLS surveys wage and salary workers and excludes the self-employed, so it is a benchmark for the occupation in this state — not the income of a self-employed carpenter. Premium tax credit eligibility is set by household modified adjusted gross income and household size, not by occupation, so treat this as a reference point rather than a determination of what you qualify for.

Why the cliff is back. The enhanced premium tax credits expired on 31 December 2025. For plan year 2026 the 400% FPL limit applies again, so household income above $62,600 ends premium tax credit eligibility outright.

What Carpenters in Florida should expect in 2027

Florida loses a carrier this cycle: Cigna is out of the ACA individual market from January 1, 2027, leaving 14 filing here. For Carpenters that is a forced decision, and a better one made in November than in January.

On price the only honest number today is national: the Peterson-KFF read of 2027 filings puts the median proposed rise near 15%, spanning −1% to 54%. Final Florida rates are not approved, so any precise 2027 figure quoted for this state is guesswork.

Mark November 1, 2026 to open and December 15 to act. That second date guarantees cover from January 1 in Florida regardless of how the current litigation over the enrollment window resolves.

All 67 counties in Florida sell a PPO, which is unusual and useful. For a carpenter covering ground, it is the plan type that travels best.

Get ahead of the November rush

You already know you are changing plans — Cigna is leaving. The only real question is whether you pick the replacement or the marketplace picks it for you, and that is a much easier decision made in August than in the second week of December.
